Shiv Arora Chief Operating Officer (COO)

I am a Bachelor of Science Graduate in Economics from the University of Warwick and a CFA Level II candidate with the CFA Institute. My work experience spans across the financial services sector, in Investment Banking, Global Wealth Management and Fund Management, gained with Citibank, Merrill Lynch Wealth Management, and Britam Asset Managers respectively. Key roles in previous companies included (i) Mergers & Acquisitions, private market transactions and deal structuring, (ii) portfolio structuring and wealth management, (iii) investment analysis and fund management, and (iv) real estate investment. While working at these institutions I gained skills and experience in analysis of private and public market transactions, deal and fund structuring and value creation for private market transactions.

I was part of the Founding Team at Cytonn, which was driven by the inspiration to create an investment platform purely focused on the interests of the client and investors. At Cytonn I focus more on Private Equity and Real Estate transactions, as well as deal structuring, fund structuring, and investment management. My work has however evolved to be more generalist across various functions in the organization, including Investments and Finance. My day-to-day job involves heading the Private Equity and Real Estate Investment functions, to ensure we are always looking for the best investment opportunities and extracting the best risk-adjusted return from our investments for our clients. This requires skills working with people, having everyone on the same page as well as strong administrative skills to ensure various pieces are all moving forward every day.

I enjoy working with a team on transactions from inception to closing and then seeing those transactions create value for our investors. There are a lot of opportunities to grow companies and provide neighborhoods in private equity and real estate, respectively. Working with staff who are right out of University, with different backgrounds and approaches to work has helped me understand that everyone has potential, and they just need time and the right training to be the best at what they do. Everyone brings a different skill-set to the table; some are detail oriented, some see the finish line first. Working in dynamic teams with positive frustrations has built me.

I find meaning in my job when I see young people growing, taking responsibility and making decisions that we as an organization stop and consider - it is the greatest feeling. Cytonn is also a firm of relationships, so seeing our clients and business partners happy with our investment returns, real estate developments and commitment to partnership makes it worth every day of work.

For anyone aspiring to join Cytonn, I would tell them that everyone is talented and everyone is sharp, each in their own way, but what separates one out is their hard work and commitment. For one to be a great Investment Manager, you need to work and read and continuously commit yourself beyond the norm, and it involves sacrifice. Find out what you want to be, then commit yourself to becoming the absolute best at it. This requires time, dedication and commitment.
