In 2014, I was among four Britam ex-staff who left to form their own business. This was driven by a compelling vision of offering better returns in the market by deploying investments into housing in the Nairobi metro area.
Upon our exit, the then Britam CEO, Dr. Wairegi launched a vicious full scale assault against the former employees. This included fabricating an audit report, ostensibly done by KPMG, and using it to file a criminal complaint at DCI. He also filed complaints with three professional bodies; CFA Institute, ICPAK and LSK. All the professional complaints were dismissed by the professional bodies and/or courts as lacking in any merit leaving just the criminal complaint pending.

Over the last 11 years, Business Daily has worked to promote the idea that “recognizing and making effort and excellence visible is a great tool for inspiration.” BD has spotlighted women who are doing an amazing job in many fields - corporate leadership, entrepreneurship, law, finance, medicine, academics, research, technology, sports, philanthropy, media, and so on.
It is great that Caroline Mutoko has taken the idea further by holding a special recognition event to celebrate these exceptional women. Great job BD, great job Caroline and congratulations to the 40 amazing women being recognized today.

We are more engrossed in getting into ventures which generate money as quickly as possible having put it the least effort, as opposed to starting a new business that can make a significant impact on our lives, hence the need for developing an entrepreneurial spirit which is the only way we can strengthen our currency, cure joblessness and uplift our standards of living.“Entrepreneurship in our country is not an option, it is a national necessity"

I am really humbled and thankful to have been invited to give a talk at Zetech University, given that Zetech itself is a product of, and living example of entrepreneurship, so I thought the topic was very relevant. In fact, your entrepreneurial spirit is captured in your tagline, Invent your Future. When your Vice Chancellor asked me to speak about “the entrepreneurial mindset”, I jumped at the opportunity, because it is one of the biggest problems we face in this country. We are more interested in tender-prenuership, where you make the most amount of money as quickly as possible and with the least amount of effort as opposed to entrepreneurship, which is really about designing and launching a new business idea that makes an impact.

Since President Uhuru Kenyatta launched Affordable Housing as part of the Big Four Agenda in December 2017, substantial progress has been made towards delivering affordable housing, but a lot more needs to be done, especially in terms of enabling private capital to flow towards financing of low to mid income housing.
In terms of progress, we have seen two main initiatives; the formation of the Kenyan Mortgage Refinancing Company, KMRC and National Housing Development Fund. KMRC will improve house affordability by increasing mortgage tenors from the current 12 years average to at least 20 years. The longer tenors will effectively reduce monthly mortgage payments by about 15 percent.

There is no doubt that the President means very well with this affordable housing initiative and it should be done, however how it’s being structured and executed leaves many key questions unanswered, and leaves doubt as to its sustainability.
